THE ESSENTIALS

What you should know.

Most relevant workplaces have been covered since 31 March 2025. Micro-firms with fewer than ten full-time equivalent employees have until 31 March 2027.

Getting the practical details right

The rules address dry recyclables, food waste and residual waste. Businesses still need suitable registered collectors and should check the current government guidance for co-collection exceptions.

Start with the context of your own job: what is actually being disposed of, whether it is domestic or commercial waste, how the load can be reached and whether any item requires individual consideration. A clear inventory avoids the trap of describing every collection as simply “mixed rubbish”.

The timetable that matters

From 31 March 2025 most in-scope workplaces were required to separate key streams for collection. Micro-firms, meaning fewer than ten full-time-equivalent employees, have a deferred deadline of 31 March 2027. Plastic-film obligations are scheduled separately. The exact arrangements can depend on operational rules and any permitted co-collection.

✳

A clearance of old stock does not remove the business’s existing waste duties.

Before you make a final decision

If you run a retail unit, office or hospitality venue, review collection arrangements, internal bin signs, staff instructions and contractor details.

When you compare collection options, consider not just the headline price but the labour, material acceptance, operator details and supporting paperwork. A good plan also identifies reusable items before they are treated as waste.

Check the original source

Regulations, booking arrangements and local collection services can change. The linked official publication is the primary source for the guidance or news item discussed here.
